On the top is the picture I took and the bottom is the picture Gerald Cyrus. This photo was probably the hardest photo i've taken because the fact that I didn't have 2 little girls in the photo but I tried to make it as close as possible. I tried to get them to put theres arm around each other but they where just done fighting. I took this photo off my phone in portrait mode. I edited this photo on photoshop and changed it to black and white so it can look as similar as possible.

Personal Background: Gerald Cyrus was born in 1957 in Los Angeles, California He began photography in 1984. His initial subjects included jazz musicians and urban street scenes and he exhibited at several Los Angeles area galleries. In 1990 he moved to New York City to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts which he obtained in 1992. While at SVA Cyrus interned at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and began work on "Kinship," a project focusing on African American family life. Throughout the 1990s he also worked on projects documentingHarlem's nightclubs and street life, New York's subways, and black communities around the United States.
Style: This man's visual characteristics are far from good. The pictures he has taken of streets and African art are really good. I would say his photography is based on what has been going on in the life of an African American person. He doesn't paint but his work is pure art. The photos he's taken of African Americans the fact that he evolved his photography around African Americans is something special. His photography poses a character to me. The fact that he was able to do this all off of just taking photos on the streets is really fulfilling especially as a black male. Philosophy: It looks like he was really trying to tell everyone that African Americans have a place on this earth. Most of his photos are mostly black people and he was trying to send a message to the world. Especially growing up back in the 1900s they didn't think black people could do anything but Gearld was able to accomplish something in photography and was also able to send his message out to the world. Also he was also being personal with his photos it seems like he has thousands of photos out in the world but the most important ones he kept to himself for him. I feel like taking pictures for him was his safe place and was something he loved to do. Influences: He influenced me to really look deeper into my culture. He also influenced me to start taking more pictures out in the world of African Americans and street art. I also feel like just reading his bio and seeing his pictures made me think about taking pictures as a living. This could be something I could really do. Gearld photos had meanings to them each and every one of them had a meaning. I feel like this made Gearld happy so this is influencing me to take photos and just be happy. |
